The real incident behind the film
Netflix connects the drama to Guzmán’s January 8, 2016 recapture following Operation Black Swan.
After escaping a military raid, Guzmán and an associate were stopped by federal officers. The officers took them to a motel while fearing a cartel rescue attempt. Guzmán tried to negotiate his release with money.
