Mark Kimball has built his political career around control.
As a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles, he understands how to manage photographs, speeches and public expectations. His home appears equally secure: a successful marriage, a privileged life and a son surrounded by protection.
That carefully constructed image collapses when his son Denny is kidnapped.
Directed by and starring Ben Affleck, Animals follows Mark and his wife Abigail as they attempt to raise the ransom while discovering that the secrets inside their marriage may be as dangerous as the people holding their child.
A campaign interrupted by terror
Before the kidnapping, Mark’s greatest concern appears to be persuading voters that he deserves power.
The disappearance of his son makes those political calculations meaningless. Influence cannot guarantee Denny’s safety, and public attention may complicate every attempt to bring him home.
The kidnappers’ demand forces Mark and Abigail into a race against time. They must locate enough money to satisfy the ransom while avoiding choices that could expose their family, destroy the campaign or place Denny in greater danger.
The title Animals suggests what happens when fear removes the civilised identities people display in public. Mark may speak confidently about values, but the crisis will reveal which principles survive when his child’s life is threatened.
The marriage beneath the public image
Kerry Washington plays Abigail, who must face the kidnapping as both a mother and the wife of a man whose private life may not match his public reputation.
Their marriage becomes central to the story when a mysterious fixer named Dayle, played by Gillian Anderson, warns that concealed information must come into the open.
Secrets create practical danger during a ransom negotiation. If Mark and Abigail do not know the truth about each other’s money, relationships or decisions, they cannot anticipate what the kidnappers might use against them.
The crisis therefore becomes two stories at once. The couple must save Denny while determining whether the life they created together was ever as stable as it appeared.
How far will Mark go?
A political candidate is expected to defend rules, institutions and public accountability. A terrified father may see those principles as obstacles.
Mark’s central conflict concerns the line he is willing to cross. Paying criminals, misleading investigators or using political connections may increase his chances of finding Denny, but each compromise could make another one easier.
The film does not need to turn him into a hero or villain immediately. Its tension comes from watching fear narrow his choices until actions that once seemed unthinkable begin to feel necessary.
Abigail faces the same pressure, and she may not agree with her husband about which risks are acceptable.
The people surrounding the Kimballs
Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz and Luis Gerardo Méndez join Affleck, Washington and Anderson in the ensemble.
Their precise relationships to the kidnapping have not all been publicly explained, and the official trailer deliberately protects the mystery.
Affleck also co-wrote the film with Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray. He has described the story as an examination of marriage and the bargains people make when attaching their lives to someone else.
That angle could separate Animals from a conventional ransom thriller. The kidnapping provides the pressure, but the marriage determines what breaks underneath it.
What viewers should expect
Animals is an adult crime drama involving child abduction, political ambition and marital deception.
The film runs for approximately one hour and 48 minutes and carries an R rating. Viewers sensitive to stories involving children in danger should approach it carefully.
The trailer promises urgency, but the most important suspense may come from conversations rather than action. Every new fact about Mark and Abigail can change what viewers believe about their family and why Denny was selected.
Flicklevel story outlook
The premise becomes compelling because Mark is running for public office when his private life is attacked.
A candidate sells voters a controlled version of himself. Kidnapping removes control and forces choices that cannot be improved by a campaign adviser.
If Animals connects its crime story to the fractures inside the Kimballs’ marriage, it could become more than a search for a missing child. It could examine whether two people can save their family after discovering that they never completely knew each other.
