Boston is already frightened when Danny Reagan and Lena Silver receive their next case.
A series of women’s deaths appears to imitate the crimes historically associated with the Boston Strangler. Whether the killer is following an old pattern or using the city’s fear to conceal a different motive, Danny and Lena must find the connection before another victim is discovered.
The investigation gives Boston Blue Season 2 an immediate threat while placing more pressure on its central partnership.
A copycat case grips the city
The Boston Strangler name carries enough history to create panic before the detectives have identified a suspect.
That public fear complicates the investigation. Every rumour can produce false leads, while media attention gives the killer an opportunity to manipulate the city. Danny and Lena must separate similarities deliberately created by the murderer from evidence that can actually identify the person responsible.
The case also forces them to examine whether the new crimes are the work of one offender or part of something broader.
Rather than beginning the season with a routine investigation, the story places the detectives inside a case capable of defining their careers.
Danny Reagan faces another decision
Donnie Wahlberg returns as Danny Reagan, the longtime New York detective who has continued his police career in Boston.
Danny understands violent criminals, but he is still adapting to a department, city and family structure different from the life he knew in New York. His methods can produce results, although his instinctive approach does not always fit comfortably inside police procedure.
Season 2 adds a professional complication: Danny faces a potentially career-defining promotion.
Accepting greater authority could allow him to influence the department, but it may also remove him from the direct investigative work that has defined him. The Strangler copycat case arrives while he must decide what kind of police officer he wants to be at this stage of his life.
Lena’s investigation becomes personal
Sonequa Martin-Green returns as Detective Lena Silver.
Lena is not simply Danny’s partner. Her family occupies several important positions across Boston’s institutions. Mae Silver works as a district attorney, Sarah Silver serves as police superintendent, Jonah Silver is an officer and Reverend Edwin Peters provides another connection to the community.
That network gives Lena access and support, but it also ensures that professional decisions can quickly become family conflicts.
Alongside the murder investigation, Lena follows a lead connecting an attack on Detective Rodgers to a powerful figure. The discovery may force her to challenge someone capable of influencing the system she is supposed to trust.
Two families inside one police story
The continuing strength of Boston Blue is the way police work intersects with family responsibility.
Danny is also trying to guide his son Sean, while Henry Reagan remains connected to the family’s new chapter. Jonah and Sean have completed their rookie year, but experience does not remove the dangers surrounding young officers.
The Reagan and Silver families approach service from different histories. Their relationships allow the series to examine policing from the perspectives of detectives, uniformed officers, prosecutors, senior leadership and relatives who live with the consequences.
The copycat investigation will test whether those connections help the detectives reach the truth or create additional pressure to protect institutions and reputations.

The returning ensemble includes Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Mika Amonson, Gloria Reuben and Ernie Hudson.
The Season 2 premiere, titled “The Crash,” airs Friday, October 9, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

Season 2 has two useful sources of tension: a murderer exploiting one of Boston’s darkest historical associations and detectives facing difficult choices inside their own careers and families.
The mystery will be most effective if the Strangler connection serves more than a familiar name. Danny and Lena need to uncover why the killer selected that pattern and what the imitation reveals about the present crimes.
