For years, Assane Diop used the name Lupin to embarrass wealthy enemies, expose hidden crimes and escape situations that should have been impossible. In Part 4, that famous identity becomes a weapon aimed directly at him.
Four years have passed since Assane surrendered to the authorities. He remains in prison, prepared to serve his sentence and leave the life of a gentleman thief behind. His plan is to keep the promise he made to his son, abandon the Lupin name and eventually reunite his family in Senegal.
Then someone else starts using his name.
A criminal announcement signed “Lupin”
Assane’s controlled prison life is disrupted when a mysterious announcement claims that several museums will be robbed simultaneously. The message is signed “Lupin,” making it appear that Assane has somehow organised another spectacular crime from behind bars.
Security around the targeted museums is strengthened, but the robberies still succeed.
Worse still, surveillance evidence appears to identify Assane as the man responsible. Captain Sofia Belkacem is seriously injured during the unfolding crisis, transforming the copycat’s game into something far more personal.
Assane now faces an impossible contradiction. He is physically inside prison, yet someone who looks or operates like him is committing crimes in his name.
Proving that he has been framed will require him to discover who has taken the Lupin identity—and why.
Assane must become Lupin again
Assane wanted to stop running. The copycat leaves him with no such choice.
Remaining in prison allows the evidence against him to grow, while escaping will make him appear even guiltier. To protect his family and clear his name, he must return to the disguises, deception and daring manoeuvres he had promised to abandon.
That is the cleverest part of the new storyline. Assane is not simply chasing another thief. He is fighting someone who understands the value of his reputation.
“Lupin” is more than a nickname. It is a public character Assane carefully created. People associate it with impossible robberies, elaborate tricks and a criminal who always appears to be several moves ahead. Once someone else controls that character, Assane loses control of how the world sees him.
The copycat does not need to defeat Assane physically. Turning his own legend against him may be enough.
His family remains the real target
Assane’s greatest weakness has never been money or prison. It is his family.
Claire and Raoul have already paid a high price for his double life. Although Assane’s actions often began with his search for justice, the danger repeatedly followed him home. His surrender at the end of Part 3 was supposed to break that cycle.
Part 4 forces him to choose again between keeping his distance and intervening before the new Lupin causes greater harm.
Omar Sy returns as Assane, with Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, Antoine Gouy as Benjamin, Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guédira, Shirine Boutella as Sofia Belkacem, Théo Christine as Bruno and Laïka Blanc-Francard as Fleur Bélanger.
What remains unknown
Netflix has not disclosed the copycat’s identity, motivation or complete connection to Assane.
That uncertainty should be preserved. The important confirmed detail is that Assane’s past has created a symbol powerful enough for another person to steal. The new criminal may want fame, revenge or something Assane has not yet recognised, but those possibilities should not be presented as facts before the episodes arrive.
The mystery gives Part 4 a strong central question: can the original Lupin defeat an enemy who has studied his methods and taken control of his public image?

Part 4 gives Assane a convincing reason to return without simply repeating an earlier robbery.
He is older, separated from his family and supposedly finished with the life that made him famous. The copycat transforms his retirement into a trap. To leave Lupin behind, Assane may first have to prove that nobody else can wear the name.
