Disney’s live-action Moana is preparing to leave cinemas for home viewing. Beginning September 8, 2026, audiences in the United States can buy or rent the film through participating digital stores. Regional availability may differ.

The real conflict beneath the adventure

Who plays Moana and Maui?
Catherine Lagaʻaia portrays Moana in her first major film role. Rather than copying the animated character’s expressions, the live-action production gives her the difficult task of making Moana’s courage, uncertainty and growing confidence feel believable through a human performance.
Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui after voicing the character in Disney’s 2016 animated film and its sequel. His return provides an important connection between the animated and live-action versions.
