Mike Tyler arrives at an environmental charity gala hoping to revive his fading career. Before the night is over, a doomsday cult will decide that throwing him into a volcano might save the world.
Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy lead Sacrifice, a dark satire in which wealthy celebrities, militant believers and one frightened action star become trapped inside an increasingly strange battle over who genuinely cares about humanity’s future.
A glamorous evening becomes a hostage crisis
Mike is a struggling action star searching for a comeback. Attending an exclusive environmental event provides publicity, influential contacts and another opportunity to perform concern in front of cameras.
The gala takes place inside a Greek mine and is hosted by billionaire Ben Bracken, played by Vincent Cassel, and his wife Gloria, portrayed by Salma Hayek Pinault.
The speeches and carefully managed appearances end when Joan, a cult leader played by Taylor-Joy, arrives with her followers and takes the gathering hostage.
Joan believes an extinction-level event will occur in three days unless three people are sacrificed to a nearby volcano.
Mike suddenly receives the heroic role he has spent his career pretending to play.
Mike Tyler faces a part he cannot escape
Mike’s action films may have taught audiences to see him as brave, but a real crisis removes the protection of scripts, stunt performers and controlled publicity.
He must decide whether heroism means saving himself, protecting the other hostages or understanding why Joan believes violence is necessary.
That conflict gives the film more substance than its deliberately outrageous premise suggests. Mike is accustomed to performing conviction. Joan possesses conviction so absolute that she is prepared to kill for it.
One character has spent his life pretending to save the world. The other may destroy people while insisting that she is saving it.
Joan and the danger of complete belief
Joan is not presented as an ordinary kidnapper seeking money or political influence. She views the hostages as part of a sacred obligation.
Her belief gives the story an unstable tension. If she is merely exploiting frightened followers, she is a manipulative criminal. If she sincerely believes catastrophe is approaching, she may regard every act of violence as morally justified.
The official material does not confirm whether her prophecy is genuine. That uncertainty should remain intact until viewers watch the film.
The more useful question is what Joan’s certainty reveals about the gala guests. Their environmental concern may be fashionable and shallow, but her willingness to die for a cause does not automatically make her righteous.
Wealth, celebrity and performance
Director Romain Gavras co-wrote Sacrifice with Will Arbery.
Their story places people who perform compassion beside people prepared to commit atrocities in the name of a cause. Both groups claim to care about the planet, but their methods reveal different forms of ego.
The ensemble includes Sam Richardson, Ambika Mod, John Malkovich, Yung Lean and Charli XCX.
The unusual cast suits a film combining mythology, celebrity satire, hostage-thriller tension and absurd comedy. Gavras filmed across Greece, Bulgaria and Iceland, including real volcanic locations.
What viewers should expect
Sacrifice is not a straightforward survival thriller.
The hostage crisis supplies urgency, but the film is also interested in the stories people tell about themselves. Mike wants to believe that he remains a hero. Joan believes she is a warrior. The billionaires want the world to see them as responsible guardians of the planet.
Being trapped together may expose how much of each identity is performance.
The film carries an R rating and runs for approximately one hour and 40 minutes.
Flicklevel story outlook
The most promising part of Sacrifice is the contrast between shallow concern and destructive certainty.
Mike and Joan appear to occupy opposite positions, yet both are performers who need an audience. One depends on fame; the other depends on followers.
If the film keeps that relationship at its centre, its volcanic sacrifice will become more than a bizarre threat. It will provide a darkly comic examination of ego, belief and the dangerous desire to become the person who saves everyone.
Sacrifice premieres on Netflix in the United States and France on October 16, 2026.
