Slough House is supposed to be where MI5 sends agents whose careers are effectively over.
Its occupants are poorly regarded, badly managed and expected to remain far from important operations. Yet every new crisis seems to prove that Britain’s discarded spies are difficult to eliminate—and even harder to control.
Season 6 removes their limited protection and sends the team on the run.
Diana Taverner has drawn the Slow Horses into what Apple describes as a deadly game of retaliation and revenge. Someone is no longer trying merely to discredit the department. The agents themselves have become targets.
Jackson Lamb must keep his agents alive
Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb, the unpleasant but highly perceptive head of Slough House.
Lamb insults his agents, ignores ordinary standards of conduct and rarely explains his complete plan. However, he also understands the hidden machinery of British intelligence better than most of the officials working from cleaner offices.
Season 6 places that knowledge under pressure.
When the team is operating inside the system, Lamb can manipulate old contacts, rivalries and secrets. Once his people are forced to run, every official resource can potentially reveal their position.
Keeping them alive may require Lamb to determine who is pursuing them before the attackers remove another member of his team.
Diana Taverner’s dangerous game
Kristin Scott Thomas returns as Diana Taverner, one of MI5’s most powerful and calculating figures.
Taverner has repeatedly used Slough House when its agents are useful and distanced herself when they become inconvenient. The official Season 6 description places her at the centre of the retaliation plot now threatening them.
That does not automatically reveal whether she is controlling events, attempting to contain them or trapped inside a plan that has moved beyond her authority.
The uncertainty is exactly where Slow Horses works best. Everyone may be serving the same country, but personal ambition and institutional survival frequently matter more than loyalty.
Why Sid Baker’s return matters
Olivia Cooke returns as Sidonie “Sid” Baker.
Sid was shot during the first season and subsequently disappeared from the programme. Her absence left important questions about what MI5 knew, what it concealed and why she had originally been assigned to watch River Cartwright.
The official Season 6 trailer confirms that Sid is alive.
Her return is more than a surprise appearance. Sid possesses a connection to the earliest part of River’s story and may understand decisions that were hidden from him.
For River, seeing her again could provide answers. It could also introduce another layer of deception. Survival does not explain where Sid has been, who protected her or why she has returned now.
Two Mick Herron novels shape the season
Season 6 adapts Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh books in Mick Herron’s espionage series.
Combining two novels gives the television season a larger amount of story material than previous adaptations. It also connects personal revenge with a broader threat against Slough House itself.
Gaby Chiappe adapted the six-episode season, while Adam Randall returned to direct.

Flicklevel story outlook
Turning the Slow Horses into fugitives changes the balance of the series.
These agents usually survive because powerful people underestimate them. Season 6 appears to remove that advantage by placing the entire group inside a deliberate campaign of revenge.
Sid’s return adds a more personal mystery. She is evidence that MI5’s official version of past events may have concealed far more than River understood.
The season’s success will depend on connecting that unresolved history to the present threat. If Sid returns only to create shock, the revelation may feel temporary. If her absence exposes a deeper institutional secret, she could become central to the future of Slough House.
