Supergirl is bringing Kara Zor-El’s interstellar adventure home. Following its theatrical release, the DC Studios film begins streaming on HBO Max on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Milly Alcock leads the film as a Supergirl shaped by a very different past from her famous cousin. Superman grew up surrounded by an adoptive family on Earth; Kara remembers the world she lost. That painful history gives her strength, but it has also left her angrier, more restless and less certain about the heroic life others expect her to embrace.

Her direction changes when a ruthless enemy strikes close to home. Kara reluctantly joins Ruthye Marye Knoll, an unexpected companion whose search for justice takes them away from Earth and across the galaxy.
Ruthye does not possess Kara’s abilities. What she has is determination and a personal reason to continue pursuing the person responsible for her suffering. Kara initially treats the mission as an unwanted burden, but Ruthye’s refusal to give up forces her to confront questions she has been avoiding.
Is revenge the same as justice? Can enormous power repair a personal loss? And what responsibility does Kara have when she is capable of helping but emotionally unprepared to become anyone’s hero?
Their journey becomes more than a hunt for an enemy. It places two grieving people beside each other—one who needs a protector and another who has never been comfortable accepting that role.
Kara and Ruthye’s uneasy partnership
The relationship between Kara and Ruthye gives the story its emotional foundation.
Kara is powerful enough to cross planets and survive dangers that would overwhelm an ordinary person. Ruthye, however, supplies the purpose behind their mission. She refuses to let her lack of power make her helpless.
Their partnership also creates friction. Ruthye wants justice, while Kara understands how easily grief can become rage. Kara may be able to protect her companion from physical threats, but she must also decide whether helping Ruthye pursue vengeance will heal either of them.
Eve Ridley plays Ruthye, while Matthias Schoenaerts portrays Krem of the Yellow Hills, the dangerous figure connected to their pursuit.
Krypto and Lobo enter the journey
Krypto accompanies Kara on the adventure, adding loyalty, humour and another responsibility she cannot simply abandon. He may be a super-powered dog, but his importance is emotional as much as practical. Krypto represents the kind of unconditional connection Kara struggles to find elsewhere.
Jason Momoa also appears as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. His arrival brings an unpredictable force into the story. Lobo follows his own interests and is neither the dependable ally nor straightforward enemy Kara might prefer.
David Corenswet returns as Superman, connecting Kara’s story to the wider DC Universe. However, the central journey belongs to Kara. The film’s challenge is allowing Superman’s presence to provide context without reducing Supergirl to somebody living in his shadow.

How is Kara different from Superman?
Kara and Clark share Kryptonian abilities, but they do not share the same emotional history.
Clark’s identity was formed on Earth. He learned compassion, responsibility and restraint through the people who raised him. Kara’s memories of Krypton and its destruction remain much closer to the surface.
That distinction matters because Supergirl is not simply asking whether Kara can defeat a villain. It is asking what kind of hero she chooses to become when hope does not come naturally to her.
Ruthye’s mission offers Kara an opportunity to use her abilities for someone else. It also places her close to another person’s grief, forcing her to recognise how her own pain has influenced her choices.
