Lowen Ashleigh needs a writing job. The one she accepts comes with a successful author’s unfinished work, access to her family home and a discovery that makes the entire arrangement feel dangerous.
Dakota Johnson plays Lowen in Verity, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller. Struggling financially, Lowen is hired by Jeremy Crawford, played by Josh Hartnett, to complete books in his wife’s bestselling series. Verity Crawford, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, has been left unable to finish them after a mysterious accident.
For a writer in Lowen’s position, the opportunity offers money and a substantial professional responsibility. She enters the Crawford home to study Verity’s material and understand the work she must continue. Instead, she discovers an unpublished manuscript containing disturbing claims about the family’s past.
Reading it changes the nature of her stay. Lowen now has to consider whether these pages are an account of real events or the invention of a writer skilled at unsettling readers. The manuscript makes her question the people around her, but finding words on paper does not settle whether they are true.
That uncertainty is the story’s most inviting trap. Lowen has been hired because she understands fiction. Now she needs to decide where fiction ends inside the life of the woman whose work she is studying.
Her growing closeness to Jeremy makes the question harder. Professional distance is already difficult when someone lives among the people they are judging. Attraction adds another reason to examine what Lowen wants to believe, as well as what she actually knows.
The setup turns an ordinary reading experience into a dangerous responsibility. If Lowen speaks, she could devastate a family on the strength of something she has misunderstood. If she keeps the discovery private, she must live with the possibility that it matters far beyond her assignment.
Michael Showalter directs, with a screenplay by Nick Antosca. The promotional material presents an adult psychological thriller combining intimacy, suspicion and a house full of unanswered questions. Its tension depends on the gap between the story Lowen reads and the reality she thinks she sees.
Verity is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on October 2, 2026. This is a theatrical release date, not a confirmed Prime Video streaming date.
