A radio reporter expects to describe the news, not become responsible for keeping a hostage alive.
That boundary disappears in American Hostage, MGM+’s eight-episode psychological thriller inspired by a real 1977 crisis in Indianapolis. Jon Hamm plays Fred Heckman, a respected radio journalist unexpectedly pulled into a confrontation between an armed man, his captive and the authorities surrounding them.
How the hostage crisis begins
Tony Kiritsis, portrayed by Giovanni Ribisi, believes mortgage executive Dick Hall has cheated and humiliated him.
He enters Hall’s workplace armed with a shotgun and takes him hostage. The weapon is connected directly to Hall, making every sudden movement potentially fatal.
Kiritsis does not want to disappear quietly. He wants an audience and demands access to Heckman’s live radio programme so that he can tell the public his version of the dispute.
Fred suddenly becomes more than a journalist reporting on a crime. His voice is now part of the crisis.
If he challenges Kiritsis too aggressively, the gunman may become violent. If he allows every accusation to go unanswered, he risks turning journalism into a platform controlled by a hostage-taker.
A 63-hour test of judgment
The standoff continues for 63 hours, forcing Heckman to remain in contact with a man whose mood can change without warning.
Police officers and negotiators want information. Listeners want constant updates. The station understands that the broadcast has become a national story. Dick Hall, meanwhile, remains in immediate physical danger.
These competing pressures create the drama’s central conflict. Heckman must make decisions without knowing whether his next sentence will calm Kiritsis or provoke him.
The crisis also raises uncomfortable questions about live media. When does reporting help the public understand an emergency, and when does attention encourage the person creating it? Can a journalist remain independent after becoming the only individual a gunman appears willing to trust?
Who stars in American Hostage?
Jon Hamm leads the series as Fred Heckman, with Giovanni Ribisi portraying Tony Kiritsis. Kristoffer Polaha plays hostage Dick Hall.
Mireille Enos, William Jackson Harper, Jonathan Tucker and Kat Cunning appear in supporting roles. Shawn Ryan, Eileen Myers and Sharon Hoffman are among the writers and executive producers.
The production is based on the scripted podcast of the same name.

American Hostage has a compelling perspective because it places communication at the centre of the danger.
Heckman does not have a weapon or a clear tactical solution. His primary instrument is his voice, and every word carries consequences for someone standing at the other end of a shotgun.
