Bryan begins the night as a medical courier. His job should be straightforward: carry what has been entrusted to him, reach the destination and move on to the next assignment.
Then the night turns against him.
Played by Austin Abrams, Bryan becomes trapped in a rapidly worsening crisis that transforms an ordinary delivery into a desperate fight for survival. The official description leaves the cause of the chaos deliberately unclear, but the Resident Evil name tells viewers that whatever is happening will not remain manageable for long.
Bryan is not introduced as a police officer, soldier or experienced monster hunter. He is a working man caught somewhere he was never prepared to be. That gives this new film a different starting point from stories built around heavily armed heroes who already understand the danger.
A man trying to survive one terrible night
The most interesting part of the confirmed story is its limited timespan. Bryan’s world appears to collapse during one horrifying night.
That creates immediate pressure. Darkness restricts what he can see. Confusion keeps him from understanding whom to trust. Every decision must be made before he has enough information to feel confident about it.
His work as a medical courier may also place him close to the source of the crisis. Couriers travel between places other people rarely notice, carrying sensitive materials while following strict schedules. Once the normal system breaks down, Bryan’s familiarity with routes and deadlines may no longer help him.
His original responsibility still matters, but staying alive quickly becomes the greater problem.
Sony Pictures has not disclosed what Bryan is carrying, where he is travelling or precisely what attacks him. Those unanswered questions form part of the film’s hook. Viewers will enter the night with almost as little information as Bryan has.
A new route into the Resident Evil world
This film is being presented as a reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise rather than a continuation of the earlier live-action movies.
That distinction matters. The franchise has already produced stories about laboratories, viral disasters, corporate secrecy and people becoming trapped inside environments overrun by unnatural threats. A new film needs familiar danger without simply repeating an old mission.
Bryan provides that fresh perspective. He is not entering the story because he wants to expose a conspiracy or destroy an enemy. He is caught inside it because he happens to be doing his job when the situation collapses.
The film can therefore introduce its world through fear and discovery. Bryan must understand the rules while something is already hunting him.
The people behind the film
Zach Cregger directs and co-writes the movie with Shay Hatten. Cregger previously directed Barbarian and Weapons, two horror films that used uncertainty carefully, allowing ordinary situations to become disturbing before revealing the full scale of the threat.
Austin Abrams leads the cast as Bryan. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser also appear, although Sony has not officially explained how their characters enter Bryan’s night.
Keeping those details hidden may help the film. Bryan should not immediately know which people can help him, which people understand the crisis and which encounters will make his situation worse.
What viewers should expect
This is being promoted as a horror film with a fast survival story. The immediate attraction is clear: an unprepared courier must keep moving while one disastrous night closes around him.
Longtime Resident Evil fans will be watching for the atmosphere, creatures and larger threat associated with the franchise. New viewers can approach it as the story of one man attempting to escape an unfolding nightmare.
The film still has something to prove. Familiar monsters and violent set pieces will not be enough if Bryan feels like a passenger in his own story. His decisions must shape the journey, and Austin Abrams must make viewers care about the frightened person beneath the chaos.
Flicklevel outlook
The strongest choice may be the simplest one: placing an ordinary worker at the centre of a disaster he does not understand.
Bryan cannot begin the night as an expert. He has to learn quickly, make mistakes and keep moving when stopping could be fatal. If the film maintains that vulnerable perspective, its horror will feel immediate rather than mechanical.
Resident Evil opens exclusively in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
