Netflix’s UNABOMBER follows Ted Kaczynski’s transformation from a gifted teenage mathematician into the domestic terrorist responsible for a decades-long bombing campaign.
Jacob Tremblay portrays the younger Kaczynski in a film that moves between two timelines: his formative years at Harvard and the later investigation attempting to stop him.
The making of the Unabomber
Kaczynski enters Harvard at only 16 years old. His intelligence earns him access to an elite institution, but intelligence does not protect him from isolation.
At Harvard, he becomes involved in controversial psychological experiments conducted by Professor Henry Murray, played by Russell Crowe. The film uses this period to examine Kaczynski’s alienation and his growing hostility toward society.
That background provides context, but it cannot excuse what follows. Kaczynski later conducted a mail-bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others.
The human cost must remain central to any account of his life. Exploring the experiences that shaped him is different from presenting him as a misunderstood hero.
The investigation closes in
The second timeline follows FBI agent Joanne Miller, portrayed by Shailene Woodley.
While the younger Kaczynski is shown moving toward isolation, Miller confronts the consequences of the person he has become. Her investigation is part of an enormous operation attempting to identify a bomber who has avoided capture for years.
The parallel structure creates two sources of tension. One asks how a brilliant student became capable of deliberate violence. The other asks whether investigators can understand his language, motives and behaviour before more people are hurt.
Miller’s determination also prevents the story from remaining entirely inside Kaczynski’s perspective. He may be the subject, but he is not the only person whose choices matter.
A dramatized true story
Netflix describes UNABOMBER as a drama inspired by true events. It should not be treated as a documentary or a complete historical record.
Certain conversations, timelines and characters may be condensed or created for dramatic purposes. Viewers interested in the case should separate the film’s interpretation from independently documented history.
The cast also includes Annabelle Wallis as Christiana Morgan, Professor Murray’s academic partner, alongside Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg and Marc Menchaca.

The responsible way to tell this story is to examine Kaczynski without allowing fascination with his intelligence to overshadow the people he harmed.
The film’s two timelines could help achieve that balance. Harvard shows the formation of his worldview, while the investigation shows the fear, damage and urgency created by his decisions.
