Alma Lancaster appears to have the future her wealthy family selected for her.
She is 18, privileged and supposedly studying law. Her family sees a respectable education and a safe professional path. What they do not know is that Alma has built a second life around the thing she genuinely wants: filmmaking.
Keeping that dream hidden already divides her life in two.
Then a student project forces her to work with Vadim Arcadi.
Vadim is 20, solitary and difficult to read. He carries a troubled past and has little in common with the controlled world Alma comes from. Their first instinct is to resist each other, but the film they must create keeps placing them together.
Conflict becomes curiosity. Curiosity becomes attraction. Before either of them is ready, the project is no longer the only thing connecting them.
Alma is already living behind a camera
Alma’s secret ambition gives the romance a stronger conflict than simple family disapproval.
Filmmaking is the future she has chosen for herself, but pursuing it requires deception. Every class, recording and project creates another opportunity for her family to discover that she is not following their plan.
Her camera may allow her to observe other people honestly while she remains unable to be honest about herself.
Vadim complicates that arrangement. He does not belong to the polished life Alma performs for her family, and a relationship with him may expose every contradiction she has been hiding.
Choosing him could also mean choosing the person she wants to become.
Vadim and the past he carries
Lucas Barski plays Vadim, while Vittoria Di Savoia portrays Alma.
Prime Video describes Vadim as a magnetic rebel with a troubled past. That description suggests his distance from other people is protective rather than accidental.
Alma may be drawn to the freedom he represents, but attraction does not automatically make him safe. She must learn which parts of his reputation are true and which secrets he is still unwilling to share.
Vadim faces a similar problem. Alma initially looks like another wealthy student protected from consequences. He cannot know immediately how much of that identity is real or how much courage it takes for her to pursue filmmaking in secret.
Their student project forces both of them to look beyond those first assumptions.
Someone is watching
The romance develops under a threat neither character can ignore.
Prime Video has confirmed that someone is watching Alma and Vadim, intending to separate them and expose secrets capable of damaging both their lives. The identity and motive of that observer remain hidden.
This adds suspense to what could otherwise have been a familiar opposites-attract story.
Every private moment may be witnessed. Every secret becomes potential leverage. Alma and Vadim cannot build trust without deciding how much truth they are prepared to risk.
The threat also raises an important question: is the person watching them trying to protect one of them, control them or punish them?
The film should resist answering too quickly. Suspense will work best if the danger grows naturally alongside the romance.
The book connection
You+Me – Against the World adapts Emma Green’s bestselling French young-adult trilogy, originally titled Toi+Moi – Seuls Contre Tous. According to Amazon, the books have sold nearly one million copies in France.
Manon Gaurin directs the film and co-writes it with Eliane Vigneron and Alix Letribot. It is Prime Video’s first French young-adult Original film.
The adaptation must introduce Alma and Vadim’s backgrounds clearly while fitting a multi-book relationship into one feature-length story. Readers may notice condensed events, but the central ideas remain visible: secret ambition, social differences, dangerous attraction and an outside force determined to divide the couple.
Flicklevel outlook
The romance has two useful sources of tension.
Alma and Vadim are hiding parts of themselves from each other, and someone outside the relationship is waiting to use those secrets against them. Their attraction can only become meaningful if they stop treating honesty as the greater danger.
The film’s success will depend on whether Alma’s creative ambition remains important after the romance begins. Her dream should not become background decoration for Vadim’s troubled past. It is the first major choice she made for herself.
