Jonah Lynn has already spent enough of his life around violence. A former soldier who became a homicide detective, he leaves Philadelphia for a small town in western Pennsylvania, hoping a quieter place will allow him a quieter existence.

That hope is shattered by Jurek Walter, a serial killer whose threat reaches Jonah’s community and family. Liev Schreiber plays Jonah, while Stephen Graham portrays the man who makes his new life feel dangerously exposed.

The investigation gains urgency when one of Walter’s victims unexpectedly returns alive. Someone else remains missing. Jonah needs answers, and his protégé, FBI agent Saga Bauer, goes undercover to obtain information from Walter himself.

Zazie Beetz plays Saga. Apple’s official series description places these two efforts alongside each other: Jonah searches outside while Saga approaches the person who may know where the search should lead.

Saga is also a surrogate daughter to Jonah. That relationship makes the assignment painfully personal. A detective can assess the value of an operation; a father figure must live with what it could cost someone he loves.

This is the premise’s strongest source of tension. Protecting Saga and finding the missing person may pull Jonah in different directions. His concern for her is understandable, but she is a trained agent with judgment and responsibilities of her own. Their bond gives the investigation an emotional complication that cannot be solved simply by identifying another clue.

The returning victim creates a further unsettling possibility. Survival should bring relief, yet here it also signals unfinished danger. The case now carries an immediate human objective: reaching the person who has not come home.

Based on Lars Kepler’s novel The Sandman, Nocturne is developed by Rowan Joffé and John Hlavin. Its ten-episode season begins globally on Apple TV on October 30, 2026, with two episodes, followed by weekly Friday releases through December 25.

For viewers drawn to investigations where professional duty strains intimate relationships, that is the story to watch: whether Jonah can pursue the answers he needs while trusting Saga to face a danger he would rather keep away from her.
