A familiar television character can begin to feel like someone we know. Matthew Perry’s performance as Chandler Bing gave viewers that sense of closeness, even though the life beyond the screen remained largely out of reach.
The One About Matthew Perry approaches that life through the people who shared it. The three-part Netflix documentary brings together family testimony, memories from friends and collaborators, and previously unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family’s collection.
His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, is among the central contributors. Longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman also participate. Mary Robertson directs, with Maxine Productions producing the series.
Netflix describes a portrait concerned with Perry’s humour, generosity, vulnerability and personal battles. That scope matters. A life story becomes more revealing when it allows apparently contradictory qualities to exist together, rather than forcing every memory into the same explanation.
The involvement of people who knew him over many years offers the documentary its strongest possibility. A public audience recognises performances and interviews. Friends and relatives can speak about the relationships that continued between those appearances, bringing a different sense of time and familiarity to the story.
Family photographs have a particular value in that context. They place a famous face inside ordinary relationships, reminding viewers that a career is only one way to measure a person’s life. The meaning of an image may come from the person standing beside its most recognisable subject.
Perry’s experiences with addiction and his advocacy are part of the announced story. Handling those subjects thoughtfully requires space for both difficulty and agency: the struggle itself, the effort involved in speaking about it, and the people affected along the way.
For Flicklevel, the documentary’s interest lies in this widening of perspective. Viewers may arrive because they loved Chandler. The more valuable encounter would be learning how Perry was remembered by people whose relationship with him went beyond a television screen.
The One About Matthew Perry premieres on Netflix on October 27, 2026.
